Older Adults Fitness Program

Older Adults Fitness is a Senior Citizen’s program that is offered here at the YMCA of Yonkers and many other fitness centers throughout the country. Applications for the program are kept at the Front Desk.  Older Adults Fitness is a fitness training program that is supported by some insurance companies.  In order to determine eligibility the applicant must bring their card to the YMCA.  The receptionist should make a copy of the card and forward the completed application and a copy of the card to the Senior Advisor.  Once the application is complete then the member is issued a Older Adults Fitness card.  If possible, all applicants should meet the Senior Advisor while they are enrolling.

Older Adults Fitness offers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and socially oriented programming that allows older adults to take greater control of their health. Older Adults Fitness members receive:

  •  A free fitness center membership with access to conditioning classes, exercise equipment, pool, sauna and other available amenities
  •  Access to any participating fitness center throughout the U.S. while traveling
  •  Customized Older Adults Fitness classes designed exclusively for older adults who want to improve their strength, flexibility, balance and endurance.

Older Adults Fitness I
Muscular Strength & Range of Movement
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance; and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.

Older Adults Fitness II
Cardio Circuit Class
Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

Older Adults Fitness - Water Aerobics for Seniors
Activate your aqua exercise urge for variety! Older Adults Fitness offers LOTS of fun and shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. No swimming ability is required, and a special Older Adults Fitness kickboard is used to develop strength, balance and coordination.

Older Adults Fitness Yoga Class
Yoga class will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity. Call for availability.
